Egeonu Chinonye is a rising voice in contemporary Nigerian art, whose work engages deeply with Black identity and Nigerian cultural heritage. Based in Abuja and originally from Imo State, Chinonye’s practice is rooted in a profound exploration of African history, memory, and form. Since beginning their artistic journey in 2024, Chinonye has swiftly established a presence, exhibiting at notable venues such as Transcorp Hilton.
Working primarily with graphite pencil and acrylic paint, Chinonye crafts visual narratives that are both intimate and expansive—abstract interpretations of African faces, traditions, and untold stories. Each piece is a layered meditation on identity, drawn from personal heritage and collective memory. The artist’s intricate beadwork adds an additional layer of texture and symbolism, bridging traditional craftsmanship with contemporary visual language.
Chinonye’s work does not merely depict culture—it converses with it, preserving and reimagining it through a distinctly modern lens. As a curator, I view Chinonye’s art as not only aesthetically compelling but also culturally vital—positioning them as a significant emerging voice in African abstraction.
